Conflict-Free Diamond Sourcing Guide

This guide provides best practices for sourcing conflict-free diamonds beyond minimum Kimberley Process compliance requirements.

Beyond the KP

The Kimberley Process only covers rough diamonds and only addresses conflict diamonds as defined by the KPCS (diamonds used to finance rebel movements). Many industry stakeholders argue that the KP's definition is too narrow and does not address diamonds used to finance human rights abuses by government forces, or diamonds associated with labour rights violations, environmental damage, or corruption.

Enhanced Due Diligence

Companies committed to responsible diamond sourcing should implement enhanced due diligence beyond KP compliance: conduct supplier audits; require supplier declarations on labour rights, environmental practices, and community relations; use traceability technology to verify diamond provenance; and engage with industry initiatives such as the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) and the Diamond Development Initiative (DDI).
